Penny Regains Health With Healthy Meals from Beth-El Community Kitchen

Penny is a current Beth-El Center guest, originally from Westport, CT, who with the help of the Center, is focused on finding housing and improving her overall health.

During the COVID pandemic, Penny was in a relationship that ended abruptly which resulted in her having to spend her entire savings on rent for her apartment. When her landlord decided to sell her apartment, she was evicted. Since then, she's had difficulty finding stable housing and employment and has experienced food insecurity.

After her eviction, due to stress and living in different places, Penny wasn't eating well. Due to her long-term lack of nutritious, hot meals, Penny's health deteriorated, which resulted in vitamin deficiencies.

Since finding the Beth-El Center, Penny gets all her meals plus snacks 5-7 days per week from our Community Kitchen and has regained her health. "Carolyn is a very good kitchen manager and always prepares meals that you would expect to come from home-- hot meals that are welcoming and comforting," says Penny.

According to Penny, the Beth-El Center is a real beacon in the homeless community as well as for people, like her, who are in transition so that during their time of crisis, they don't forego important things in life, such as healthy food and socialization.

Penny hopes to work part time again and is looking for senior housing.

She highly recommends Beth-El Center and our Community Kitchen for anyone experiencing food insecurity. "They provide great comfort food and meals that can meet your nutritional needs so you can stay healthy," says Penny. "Beth-El turned my life around"

Beth-El Center's Community Kitchen is open to the public and provides 125-150 hot meals per day.
